The research component has been key to develop Cortina Medical Devices. In this section you can access to our clinical trials developed in the following countries.

South Africa

In Collaboration with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre and Colleagues at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, we compared a human powered nebulizer to an electric nebulizer in their ability to obtain a good sputum sample for TB diagnosis from subjects in outlying townships of Cape Town.  Our nebulizer was just as effective as an electric one at producing a good sample.  To read the study click here

El Salvador

Working with the Ministry of Health and Faculty from U.S.A.M., we compared our hand-cranked nebulizer with an electric one in the treatent of asthma.  They were equivalent. We also deployed 14 nebulizers throughout the east of El Salvador on Ministry of Health teams called ECOS Familiares.  Community health workers used our nebulizers successfully to treat a variety of conditions. Guatemala

We are  proposing two projects in Guatemala.  First, we are proposing a study with Universidad Rafael Landívar and the Ministry of Health to do intensified case finding of TB in children of TB-positive parents.  We are also proposing a field trial in rural Guatemala with a group of community health workers.

Up in the mountains in Patzun, Guatemala, there is no electricity and for people there the nearest clinic can be 4 hours away from home.
